Job Description:
CMSS faculty teach private music lessons, group classes and/or ensembles at CMSS and in our community partnership programs. Faculty members are responsible for providing high quality music instruction grounded in CMSS’ mission to provide an equitable and inclusive center of excellence in music education that empowers individuals, inspires creative passion, and promotes well-being in our greater community. Teachers at CMSS are expected to be knowledgeable in the literature, technique and pedagogy of their instruments or disciplines. CMSS faculty must have sensitivity and responsiveness to the individual needs and musical goals of their students, and an awareness of their overall impact on students’ musical and personal growth. Additional opportunities for faculty include teaching for Sonido Musica, the Adaptive Music Program or other community partnership programs, Great Gigs, leading or teaching summer programs, leading new or existing ensembles or classes, and program coordinator positions. Professional development and continued learning and growth is encouraged and supported for CMSS faculty.
Responsibilities:
- Â Â Teaching regular weekly lessons during the school year (Late August/Early September to Mid June) and/or the summer term
- Â Â Facilitating professional virtual instruction for all teaching responsibilities (private lessons, ensembles, classes, makeup lessons) when CMSS indicates virtual instruction is necessary
- Â Â Maintaining weekly contact with students and their families for scheduling changes, makeup lessons, CMSS news, events, surveys, performance opportunities and other important communications
- Â Â Scheduling, preparing and coordinating at least one student recital per year (virtually or in person)
- Â Â Responding promptly and effectively to email, phone or in-person requests from admin staff or other faculty
- Â Â Demonstrating capability in ASAP registration software (training provided)
- Â Â Attending all required meetings, discussion groups, trainings and events
- Â Â Taking care of studio and recital rooms and equipment
- Â Â Abiding by all Employee Handbook policies and procedures
Required Qualifications:
- Teaching experience – including tailoring lessons to each student’s needs, assessing and giving feedback on students’ progress, helping students prepare for performances, and mentoring young students
- Professional performance experience
- Ability to demonstrate effective teaching techniques for your instrument
- Knowledge of repertoire for all skill levels on your instrument
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusivity, which are foundational to CMSS’ mission
- Effective communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- References from members of our community or faculty
- Skills in multiple different musical styles and genres
- Experience performing and/or teaching in the Greater Springfield area
- Experience tailoring lessons/content to be culturally relevant to the student
- Experience teaching students with different learning styles
- Higher education in music
Compensation:
Private lesson rates currently range from $32 – $42 per hour depending on experience and qualifications. Additional rates apply for lesson preparation, ensemble instruction, performances and other programs. Professional development is encouraged and supported.
